The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 10 | Col. Bruce Hampton Bonus Throwback Episode

Col. Bruce Hampton was a legendary musician, actor, producer, and all around nice guy. He was in Sling Blade, the Run the Jewels video for “Blockbuster Night Part 1,” Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and that’s just the tip of his IMDb page.

Col. Bruce was also a musical pioneer and one hell of a nice guy. I had the honor of interviewing Bruce backstage at Suwannee Roots Revival 2016.

This was one of the first episodes we recorded for The Marinade. A lot has changed since then, from production to interview style, but we want you all to have a chance to hear this wonderful conversation. As was his way, he made me feel like an old friend. Rest in peace, Col. Bruce.

The music in this episode is from Deadman De Los Santos off of the forthcoming EP 'Deadman and Stranger.' The EP will be released on April 6th.

Trae Crowder cannonballs into The Marinade. Trae is probably best known for his viral videos railing against racism, Trump, Nazis, sexism and all manner of conservative bull shit. He is a Southern man with liberal sensibilities and one of the funniest comedians in the world right now.

Morgan Freeman and Whoopi Goldberg are fans. So are we. We had the honor of talking about the creative process with Trae ahead of his show at The Comedy Zone in Jacksonville, FL. He was thoughtful, engaging, and hilarious. Get down on it.

WellRed Comedy:

This episode contains music by Jacksonville-based songwriter Jackie Stranger. You can check him out on his Facebook page. He wrote and recorded the songs featured here during Hurricane Irma. He's also a hell of a nice guy.

Legendary songwriter James McMurtry takes a dip in The Marinade. McMurtry is the genius behind such tunes as "Levelland" and "We Can't Make it Here Anymore." His 2015 release Complicated Game is one of our favorites in recent memory and includes a song we can't seem to get out of our heads, "You Got to Me."

In this episode, McMurtry discusses what really scares white supremacists, the evolution of his creative process from bar napkins to iPhones, and where he gets some of those incredible song lines. Also, Jason Earle opens up about his creative process and the heavy day that preceded this interview. Cheers, y'all.

The Marinade with Jason Earle Episode 7 | Cory Branan and Jon Snodgrass

download.jpeg

Wolf and Cobra belly flop into The Marinade! This is our silliest episode to date and a dream come true. Cory Branan and Jon Snodgrass are two of our all-time favorite songwriters. Branan's new record Adioswas released in 2017 and is one of our favorite records of the year. Snodgrass is best known for his work with Drag the River but also has an excellent solo catalog as well as work with the bands Scorpios and Armchair Martian. We joke about Jon's indecipherable emails and proclivity for 'playing' drums, dive deep into political waters, and discuss the creative process for each of these brilliant writers.

Lee Bains III dives head first into The Marinade! Lee and his band the Glory Fires have made the most important record of 2017. Youth Detention: Nail My Feet Down to the Southside of Town is an epic double album that reads like a series of essays on race, class, and our current political situation.

Lee is also a thoughtful, kind, fascinating person. We caught up at Lil' Indies in Orlando, FL, before his set at Will's Pub and discussed what influenced his poetic lyrics, why college football players should be paid (or maybe not), and how each of us came to appreciate Against Me!. Cheers, y'all.

Seth Walker enters the Marinade! Seth is a singer, songwriter, and all around delightful human being. He has written with the likes of Oliver Wood from The Wood Brothers and continues to make genre-defying tunes that come from the heart. We discuss the parallels between golf and jazz, his upbringing in a Quaker community in North Carolina, and how we all just need to stop thinking so much.

Micah Schnabel.jpg

Micah Schnabel dives into The Marinade! Micah is best known for his work with the band Two Cow Garage but we talk more about his solo work in this conversation. He recently released his masterwork to date, a record called Your New Norman Rockwell. It is intensely personal and political- an important piece of art that we highly recommend you put into heavy rotation. Micah goes deep on the creative process, how music filled the void left when his baseball career ended, lessons he has learned about relationships, and so much more.

You can find Micah's albums on his bandcamp page and his partner Vanessa's work on Etsy
