Van Plating wafts into The Marinade! Van Plating is a singer, songwriter, and virtuoso violin player from Lakeland, Florida, whose latest record The Way Down is a personal examination of love, family, vulnerability, and so much more. 

We caught up at Van Plating’s beautiful home in central Florida. Van and I became fast friends this year and this conversation reflects that dynamic. We talked for over two hours that felt like thirty minutes.

Tennessee Jet climbs down into The Marinade. Tennessee Jet is a singer and songwriter from Oklahoma whose latest record, his fourth full length LP, is a gorgeous collection of songs called South Dakota. TJ, a guitar, and sometimes his harmonica are the instruments that lay his characters bare.

In this episode we talk about the process of making South Dakota, the importance of considering all sides of an issue, and much more.

Ryan Anderson gallops into The Marinade. Ryan is the lead singer and principal songwriter for the band Bendigo Fletcher, whose latest record Fits of Laughter is one of our favorites of the year. 

This episode is the third in our Americanafest 2021 series. I was fortunate to travel to Nashville, TN, for a weekend in September. I got to spend time with wonderful creatives and saw outstanding sets from AHI, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Van Plating, Tre Burt, Great Peacock, Matthew Fowler, and several more. If you ever have the chance to go to Americanafest, do it. The folks whose music you love are not only playing sets all over town but also just mingling in the crowd. And, to a person the folks I got to meet and hang out with was a pure delight.

This is Episode 99 and our guest is Jeremie Albino. Jeremie is a singer and songwriter from Ontario, Canada, which is a part of the world that has been very good to The Marinade. Albino has toured with the likes of St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Shovels and Rope, JD McPherson and more. His music is soul and blues, it is rock and country. He can sing, he can write, and damnit can he perform.

Justin Corsbie. Justin is a filmmaker whose first feature length film is must viewing for any film lover and tailor made for fans of The Marinade. Hard Luck Love Song was inspired by the Todd Snider song “Just Like Old Times.” Snider is of course a frequent subject of conversation on this podcast and one of the most beloved guests in The Marinade’s history.

Hard Luck Love Song is a film in the spirit of The Marinade not only because of the Todd connection. It is a work born of a fit of inspiration, an improbable explosion of creativity from a filmmaker who had a vision, big dreams, and an uncompromising will to make his work come to life.

In addition to those wonderful records, the guys just collaborated to write the music for the stage production of SE Hinton’s classic novel The Outsiders. Willy Vlautin rides into The Marinade! Willy is both one of our favorite songwriters AND one of our favorite novelists. Willy’s musical work includes excellent records as frontman of the band Richmond Fontaine and recent also wonderful albums as the primary songwriter and guitar player for The Delines.

His excellent novels include The Motel Life, Northline, Lean on Pete, The Free, Don’t Skip Out on Me, and his most recent book The Night Always Comes.
