Van Plating wafts into The Marinade! Van Plating is a singer, songwriter, and virtuoso violin player from Lakeland, Florida, whose latest record The Way Down is a personal examination of love, family, vulnerability, and so much more.
We caught up at Van Plating’s beautiful home in central Florida. Van and I became fast friends this year and this conversation reflects that dynamic. We talked for over two hours that felt like thirty minutes.
Tennessee Jet climbs down into The Marinade. Tennessee Jet is a singer and songwriter from Oklahoma whose latest record, his fourth full length LP, is a gorgeous collection of songs called South Dakota. TJ, a guitar, and sometimes his harmonica are the instruments that lay his characters bare.
In this episode we talk about the process of making South Dakota, the importance of considering all sides of an issue, and much more.

Ryan Anderson gallops into The Marinade. Ryan is the lead singer and principal songwriter for the band Bendigo Fletcher, whose latest record Fits of Laughter is one of our favorites of the year.
This episode is the third in our Americanafest 2021 series. I was fortunate to travel to Nashville, TN, for a weekend in September. I got to spend time with wonderful creatives and saw outstanding sets from AHI, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Van Plating, Tre Burt, Great Peacock, Matthew Fowler, and several more. If you ever have the chance to go to Americanafest, do it. The folks whose music you love are not only playing sets all over town but also just mingling in the crowd. And, to a person the folks I got to meet and hang out with was a pure delight.

Justin Corsbie. Justin is a filmmaker whose first feature length film is must viewing for any film lover and tailor made for fans of The Marinade. Hard Luck Love Song was inspired by the Todd Snider song “Just Like Old Times.” Snider is of course a frequent subject of conversation on this podcast and one of the most beloved guests in The Marinade’s history.
Hard Luck Love Song is a film in the spirit of The Marinade not only because of the Todd connection. It is a work born of a fit of inspiration, an improbable explosion of creativity from a filmmaker who had a vision, big dreams, and an uncompromising will to make his work come to life.

Joe Pug dives into The Marinade! Joe Pug is a singer, songwriter, and podcaster whose work has meant so much to me since I was introduced to his music over a decade ago. Pug has released a handful of excellent full length studio albums, a couple of equally outstanding EPs, and a must listen live record, Live at Lincoln Hall which includes Pug’s friend the great Strand of Oaks. His most recent album The Diving Sun is one of my favorite records of the year. In addition to music, Pug has a fantastic podcast called The Working Songwriter where he has hosted the likes of Brian Koppelman, Ray Wylie Hubbard, John Hiatt, Lucinda Williams, Todd Snider, and more.
Nathan Bell pounds his way into The Marinade. Nathan Bell is a singer and songwriter whose latest record Red, White, and American Blues (it can happen here) is now available everywhere. Red, White, and American Blues is a powerhouse record that includes contributions from Aubrie Sellers, Regina McCrary, and Patti Griffin. This is one of those conversations that covers a ton of ground. Y’all, I am so grateful for this opportunity and so excited for you to hear this one.

While Francis’s home is technically New York, as you will hear in this conversation he is a man of the world. And that is what you get from Wanderkid. Jerry is a singer, songwriter, and producer whose work includes five full length records and an EP with his band The Black Swans, production work for several talented artists including the great Larry Jon Wilson, and a handful of wonderful solo records including his most recent album The Unlikely Optimist and his Domestic Adventures.
Jamestown Revival strikes gold in The Marinade! is a duo made up of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. They have released three full length records, a live album, and four EPs, including the most recent offering Fireside with Louis L’Amour, which is the main focus of this conversation. In addition to those wonderful records, the guys just collaborated to write the music for the stage production of SE Hinton’s classic novel The Outsiders. Jonathan and Zach and thoughtful, funny, open, and honest conversationalists.

Willy Vlautin rides into The Marinade! Willy is both one of our favorite songwriters AND one of our favorite novelists. Willy’s musical work includes excellent records as frontman of the band Richmond Fontaine and recent also wonderful albums as the primary songwriter and guitar player for The Delines.
His excellent novels include The Motel Life, Northline, Lean on Pete, The Free, Don’t Skip Out on Me, and his most recent book The Night Always Comes.

Andrew Bryant rolls into The Marinade. Bryant is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.
His music first entered our consciousness through his band Water Liars with Justin Peter Kinkel Schuster. Their most recent record Roll On was released in 2020, the same year that Bryant released his solo record Sentimental Noises. Both records were among our favorites of that most auspicious year.
His most recent outstanding record is called A Meaningful Connection.

Daryl Hance saunters into The Marinade. Daryl is a singer, songwriter, and guitar player whose music means SO much to me. He has a distinct way of playing guitar that I adore. Just a couple of licks and I can instantly recognize a Daryl Hance tune. Describing his music is a next to impossible task. It feels like the soundtrack to my life- swampy, bluesy, funky, sexy, soulful stuff. I am honored to bring this one to you.
