Oliver Wood Returns | The Marinade Episode 166

Oliver Wood is the lead singer and one of the founding members of Grammy nominated  trio The Wood Brothers which he co-founded with his brother Chris and Jano Rix in 2006. His latest solo record Fat Cat Silhouette comes out on June 14, 2024.

For this collection of songs he enlisted Rix on production duty and percussion along with great friend of The Marinade Seth Walker, the incomparable Katie Pruitt, and several other esteemed collaborators. Y’all, I have been a fan of Oliver’s music since damn near the inception of The Wood Brothers and I am thrilled to bring y’all this conversation. This is the third time I have had the pleasure of chatting with Oliver on record. He is always thoughtful and I always learn something.

Kyle Keller | The Marinade Episode 165

Kyle Keller is a singer and songwriter who currently makes his home in Gainesville, FL (Go Gators!). Kyle’s sophomore record The Great American Highway was released in the summer of 2023 and it’s a delight that gives and gives. So is the man himself as you will hear in this episode.

I have known Kyle for several years. He and my dear friend Jordan Foley are very close and the three of us sat having tea and talking about life here in my beloved Milk District in Orlando then walked over to the porch of Barley and Vine Biergarten to record. It was a gorgeous April day that was a long time coming.

Sam Emerson Bodary (Hello Emerson) | The Marinade Episode 161

Sam Emerson Bodary is the lead singer and principal songwriter of Columbus, Ohio’s Hello Emerson. Hello Emerson’s latest record unpacks a serious car accident suffered by Bodary’s father. It is an examination of family and mortality in a way that makes both and their attendant themes seem more manageable than they might in practice. To Keep Him Here is a stunning record and I am so grateful for the opportunity to sit down with Sam.

Most notably the debut EP from his band The Kilograms with J Duckworth, Joe Gittleman, and Michael McDermott is now available wherever you consume music. This is essentially me and Sammy shooting the shit and I hope y’all enjoy it as much as we did.

Joe Pug Returns | The Marinade Episode 158

Joe Pug is our guest for the second time. Joe is a revered singer, songwriter, and podcaster from Greenbelt, Maryland. He has been releasing music since 2009’s classic record Nation of Heat, which was about the time his work came into my life when he opened for the legendary Steve Earle. His latest record Sketch of a Promised Departure will be released on March 3, 2024.

The first time we talked was a remote conversation back in 2021. This time we got to sit down with Joe backstage ahead of his show at Tuffy’s Music Box in Sanford, FL. The wonderful songwriter and friend of the show Michael McArthur opened with Josh Davis on guitar. The atmosphere was welcoming and beautiful and I am so grateful to bring you this episode. Everyone, it is my great honor to bring you the return of Joe Pug.

Jaimee Harris | The Marinade Episode 157

Jaimee Harris is a singer and songwriter from Waco, Texas, who is one of my new favorite artists. Her debut full length record Red Rescue was released in 2018 to well deserved high praise. For whatever reason, that album snuck by my ears, but her follow up Boomerang Town, which came out last year got its hooks in me on the first listen.

As fate would have it, Jaimee was on tour with the legendary Mary Gauthier at that very moment and the tour was stopping just down the road.
Thankfully, Jaimee agree to sit down with us at Gram Parson’s Derry Down in Winter Haven, FL, earlier this month for a delightful conversation about writing, teaching, her incredible new record Boomerang Town, and of course, pinball.

This is Episode 153 and our guest is Kaitlin Butts. Kaitlin is a singer and songwriter from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her incredible record What Else Can She Do is an examination of complicated female characters who are up against the patriarchy, addiction, family issues, and as she Kaitlin puts it, “tension and them being at their lowest point.”

We caught up with Kaitlin in her car backstage after her set at the wonderful Orange Blossom Revue Festival in Lake Wales, FL, at the beginning of the month. Be sure to check out our two Jason’s Journal recaps of that incredible experience.

Y’all, this was maybe the most fun I’ve had making an episode. Kaitlin is smart and hilarious. I can’t say enough about her as a songwriter, performer, and conversationalist.
